The 62-year-old is a recognizable face on the Haywood Road bus (Route 1), which he’s driven […]

The Bob Moog Foundation’s planned Moogseum has gotten a $600,000 boost from the Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority. Swannanoa residents prepare for referendum on incorporation
Any North Carolina town that seeks to incorporate faces a long and sometimes arduous process, especially as the move must be approved by the General Assembly. The process can take years, as Dave Alexander, chair of the Swannanoa Incorporation Task Force, has found out. But now, state Sen. Martin Nesbitt has proposed a bill that […]
County to restart zoning process
Buncombe County won’t appeal a March 17 ruling that overturned its zoning and multifamily-construction ordinances, the Board of Commissioners decided after a March 24 closed session. Instead, the county will restart the lengthy process of approving the zoning ordinance. In the meantime, the commissioners said they plan to institute a moratorium on “undesirable” property uses. […]

The Green Scene
Electricity sparked Benjamin Franklin‘s curiosity—dangerously so. He strung a wire to an iron rod attached to his chimney, rigging it to ring a bell in the house when struck by lightning (never mind the risk of fire). And in 1752, in the middle of a thunderstorm, he also stuck a wire on a kite (or […]

A morel to this foray
I will always remember the warm afternoon when I spotted my first morel. Last spring, two hours into scouring a trail off the Blue Ridge Parkway for the gourmet mushrooms, I was on the verge of giving up. Then, with the look of a kid who’d just found the last Easter egg, my hunting partner […]
A hoop house in every yard
On a cool but sunny day in late March, I parted a plastic curtain, stepped into a hoop house in Swannanoa, and found a flourishing garden. Arugula, Swiss chard, spring beauty, ‘Lollo Rosso’ lettuce, mizuna, bunching onions, carrots and more grew in long, wide rows of rich, dark earth piled almost a foot higher than […]
