But wait, there’s more

Enough Mumpower bashing already. Please, would all of you whose hair has been falling out about his ghastly drug-scene investigations and his demonic behavior with the APD kindly get a life? I turn my back for five minutes, and the lot of you are standing in line to have another whack at him.

Look at it this way: Suppose we were talking about fire instead of drugs—who would tolerate that? Who wouldn’t question a fire department that just let things burn? If you say to me, “Oh, that’s different,” I must ask just how is it different? Shall we discuss child abuse and the DSS? Sex offenders, registered or otherwise?

Enter, Arnold J. Mandell, M.D., whose letter appeared in the Jan. 24 issue [“Send Mumpower Back to School?”]. We are asked to accept crime because it is du jour elsewhere, or “invariant,” as the good doctor says. We are being “unsophisticated” and “potentially perturbing” if we object to it; after all, it’s geographically isolated and non-expanding. Gee, this sounds like something any city would be proud to have.

I would like to point out that such a rationale has previously declared that women shouldn’t vote and kept Negroes riding at the back of the bus. And, as invariantly happens, many singers would change their tunes if the “equilibrium” were occurring in their own neighborhoods and happening to their own friends and loved ones.
