It’s just about time

It’s an exciting time for the coordinators of Time for Our Power! Women Bringing Change to the World, a Southeastern regional conference slated for June of 2008 at the Asheville Civic Center. That’s because they recently got word that a high-profile activist/celebrity will appear as the keynote speaker of the event.

Organizers Patty Levesque, Lisa Watters (both of whom are Xpress staffers) and Maureen McDonnell will reveal the identity of said personality at a kickoff event this Monday, June 25.

“All we can really say right now is that she is a definite American icon, and a woman who has been very open and honest about her own struggle to find her power as a woman,” Watters hints.

The identity of the famous femme destined for Asheville won’t be the only news disclosed at the upcoming event. The winner of the Time for Our Power! conference logo contest will also be announced, and granted a $500 award. “There were 40 submissions altogether, and it was really hard to choose the winner,” Watters says.

Time for Our Power!, which seeks to provide women with inspiration and skills to bring about change in their lives and in the world, is patterned after an annual conference series on women’s empowerment staged by he Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, N.Y.

Attending the women’s conferences in New York inspired the organizers to bring a similar event to Asheville. “I would talk to friends about how much I got out of those conferences and I wished they, too, could’ve been there,” says Levesque. “I am thrilled to be able to bring a similar experience to them here in our area.”

The Time for Our Power! Logo Award Reception—and celebrity announcement—will be held at Sante Wine Bar in the Grove Arcade on Monday, June 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. An admission fee of $10 includes two glasses of wine and appetizers.
