Meals On Wheels of Asheville and Buncombe County offers the delivery of nutritious meals and friendly visits to 550 homebound elderly in our area. The meals are delivered by caring volunteers who are often the only source of human contact clients encounter on any given day. One client, B.P., shares, “The food is so good and the volunteers are so great. This is the most help I’ve ever had.”
In addition to the weekday delivery of meals, MOW also provides frozen meals for weekends and nutritional drinks to the more fragile clients. The Pet Food Program helps ensure that clients’ pets stay healthy too.
To raise funds, MOW holds an annual silent and live auction. This year’s Plate Expectations will be held September 15 at the Country Club of Asheville. The organization is also planning a bike rally to be held in the spring of 2008.
As the 65-plus population continues to increase so does the need for volunteers at agencies that assist the elderly. MOW currently has 59 people on their waiting list. Volunteers may deliver one day a week, one day a month or act as substitute drivers when called upon. Executive Director Marilyn Carter states, “The longer people can live in their own homes, among their familiar surroundings, the longer they can live with grace and dignity.” To volunteer or for more info: 253-5286 or www.mowabc.org
