I rarely respond in writing to news articles, but Nelda Holder’s “Two Boys, Two Worlds” [Aug. 22] was so thoughtful and well written that I had to say, “Way to go, Nelda!” I could tell whose side she was on, and yet she managed somehow to remain professionally neutral, a rare trait among those of us who feel compassionate about issues these days. Thanks for what you do.
My real hope is that your fine article will be the start of a community dialogue, an exchange of comments about how we as a community can assist the Hispanic community in their quest for a self-reliant and better life—more a part of the whole cloth that is Western North Carolina.
Taking my “druthers” a step further, the Mountain Xpress, or some neutral body or person, needs to be the “gate keeper” to moderate the comments, as I imagine there are some shrill voices on both sides.

Before you comment
The comments section is here to provide a platform for civil dialogue on the issues we face together as a local community. Xpress is committed to offering this platform for all voices, but when the tone of the discussion gets nasty or strays off topic, we believe many people choose not to participate. Xpress editors are determined to moderate comments to ensure a constructive interchange is maintained. All comments judged not to be in keeping with the spirit of civil discourse will be removed and repeat violators will be banned. See here for our terms of service.
