You may think you know what to expect at this Saturday’s Asheville Holiday Parade—it’s the same every year, right?
Wrong. “We have more creativity than we’ve ever had” exhibited at this year’s parade, says Parade Director Sara Widenhouse. “The caliber of the entries is top notch.”
And while Widenhouse is quick to point out that the parade will feature all of the holiday chestnuts—marching bands, floats, Santa and all that—it will be adorned by many new bells and whistles.
To mention just a few: the fabulous Hillcrest Hi Steppas will give a 30th anniversary performance; Earth Fare and Meals on Wheels will present a 28-foot Turkey; Greenlife Grocery is sponsoring the larger than life puppets of Chapel Hill-based Paperhand Puppet Intervention; La Zoom Tours’ purple bus will host the Pritchard Park drum circle; the Blue Ridge Rollergirls will wheel on through; and Asheville’s own Firecracker Jazz Band will perform from a float shaped like a 1907 gramophone.
There are some 100 entries in the parade, which travels through downtown on Patton Avenue and is co-sponsored by the Asheville Merchants Corporation and the city of Asheville. The fun begins at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17.
