The three Republican candidates vying to run against Rep. Heath Shuler — John Armor, Spence Campbell and Carl Mumpower — will be profiled in tomorrow’s Mountain Xpress, as they enter the final stretch before the May 6 primary election. In the meantime, the would-be challengers in the House of Representatives District 11 can be heard from 3 to 5 p.m. today (Tuesday, April 15) on WWNC 570 AM, when they debate on Matt Mittan’s Take a Stand! program.
To get your questions to the candidates, call 240-9962 or e-mail mattcave@wwnc.com. If you can’t get to a radio, the program is streamed and archived at the station’s Web site.

Thanks for reading through to the end…
We share your inclination to get the whole story. For the past 25 years, Xpress has been committed to in-depth, balanced reporting about the greater Asheville area. We want everyone to have access to our stories. That’s a big part of why we've never charged for the paper or put up a paywall.
We’re pretty sure that you know journalism faces big challenges these days. Advertising no longer pays the whole cost. Media outlets around the country are asking their readers to chip in. Xpress needs help, too. We hope you’ll consider signing up to be a member of Xpress. For as little as $5 a month — the cost of a craft beer or kombucha — you can help keep local journalism strong. It only takes a moment.
and you can watch the complete 90-minute March 27th URTV debate of these three candidates here:

Armor attacked Mumpower on the air, after Mumpower left the 570 studios, typical of BAR card low life.
Campbell hasnt got a clue. Shuler has alphabet soup problems,in short this race is as much of a joke as the presidental farce.Mumpower is a good man, but like Ron Paul, he is not on the A team of evil.
Good men in dont stand a chance of winning here in Babylon the Great, home of the fools, who think voting makes a differance.
Would someone ask a certain somebody to go start his own blog?
What a buzzkill this guy is.
Mr. Smith I would ask you to refrain from attacking the great Dr.! He is only trying to speak the truth. Does that frighten you?
Why would you vote for the A Team of Evil. Their van isn’t near as cool as the real A team’s van and their Mr. T is just some wrinkly old guy wearing fake gold necklaces.
Don’t let him get to you good Dr.
Keep up the work! Awaken the masses!
To be clear – you can watch the edited 90-minute debate of the three candidates at the link Ralph provided above.
Not really complete, but maybe I’m being too picky.
Yes… you are being too picky, Gordon… editing is standard procedure. Your questions stayed, your fluff wound up on the cutting room floor. The debate was about the candidates, not you … and it was not a venue for you to flog liberal concepts or your website. The other two guest panelists (and the emphasis here is on ‘guest’) did not take advantage of their status.
And… just to show that I was really being KIND to Gordon, here is his unedited questions:
http://urtvforums.org/gs.php
As any journalist will tell you, the best way to make someone look bad is to present their unedited comments.
You’re welcome, Gordon.
I thought that might hit a nerve with you, Ralph. It’s no big deal, but I was assured by the Chair of the County Republican Party that I could ask whatever I wanted, however I wanted, and that my questions would be better if they were “hard-hitting”.
Your editing job was acceptable, and you’re a good man to volunteer to do it. I just wanted to make it clear to folks that it was edited.
I am sorry you misunderstood, Gordon… Dr. Johnson was not in charge of the program and really had no say in its presentation or editing (as much as I like and respect him). The show was a joint effort by four URTV producers — myself, Richard Bernier, Kathy Rhodarmer, and Randy Thomas. We treated you quite nicely overall — and also the candidates AND, especially, the viewing public; who deserved and got an unbiased look at these three potential Congressmen.
In fact — having had the misfortune of watching ABC’s presidential debate last night, I would say for once (and certainly not to be the last), URTV blew ABC away. I like Charlie and George a lot, but they flat went amateur last yesterday (totally unexpected, where’s broadcast standards these days?).
Ralph & Gordon,
Ralph thanks for editing –
Gordon thanks for coming –
I see were we need written rules for the next debate. I will admit, it was the first time were
a panelists walked over to a candidate & hand papers too during the debate.
Gordon, you could have gave them the copies before the debate instead of doing this during the debate.
Plus a plug for your blog durning the debate @ awkward to many.
(As you say “kinda weird & awkward”)
Lets just move on – thats what I like to say.
They will aways be another day – I look forward with you working to get Shular to debate on URTV this fall.
Richard
actually, the promotional mention of the website is against the URTV rules, I HAD to cut that. ;-)
