Asheville Free Book Exchange is Asheville’s newest recycling center. It accepts donations for all kinds of books, and gives books away for free. It’s also available as a space for local artists to display their art, or as a space to host events such as movie screenings, benefits, book circles, story times or literacy and art classes. In addition to free books, the studio space has free Wi-Fi, chairs and couches and a children’s section.
A donation-based center, the Asheville Free Book Exchange relies on its generous donors and volunteers in order to operate. It is currently seeking volunteers, who are welcome to bring their own ideas to the center. Volunteer Asia Szrek says, “We hope the Book Exchange can become a hub for the city of Asheville, not just a place to get free books, but also to have meetings, singer/songwriter events, open-mic poetry, you name it, let’s do it!”
Asheville Free Book Exchange is located at 191 Lyman St. at the Riverview Station in Asheville’s River District. It is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturdays from noon to 6 p.m.; and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. Open mics will be held the first Thursday of every month starting in August.
