The Suspect: Overflow Jug Band
According to the California Jug Band Association, “The essence of the jug-band idea is people jamming music for free and for fun with an extremely unrehearsed, spontaneous nature to it.” OK, so maybe this show isn’t free, but that definition suits this Asheville super group, which includes Josh Phillips and Ben Riva (Trainwreks) as they play everything from country to reggae.
Can Be Found: The Orange Peel, Wednesday, April 20.
RIYD (Recommended if You Dig): Josh Phillips Folk Festival, Sugar Ray.
You Should Go If: You always call in sick on 4/20; you automatically un-friend people who post anything pertaining to exercise as part of their Facebook status; you considered it a real feather in your cap when someone tried to steal your identity last year; your favorite childhood Easter memory is … ”sleep-eating” the marshmallow peeps out of everyone else’s baskets.
The Suspect: Shannon Whitworth
Whitworth spent four years playing banjo and singing harmony in the bluegrass band The Biscuit Burners. Last year she released her second solo album, Water Bound, which the Asheville Roots Music Review blog called “…without a doubt one of the best releases I’ve heard in 2010.”
Can Be Found: The Grey Eagle, Friday, April 22.
RIYD: Tift Merritt, Caitlin Cary.
You Should Go If: You lie to your therapist sometimes to save her from being disappointed in you; it infuriates you when people act as though Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi are interchangeable; you think that obsessively watching The Love Boat may have contributed to your unrealistic romantic expectations; your favorite childhood Easter memory is … when you “accidentally” sat on your sister’s Easter bonnet.
The Suspect: The Pimps of Joytime
This Brooklyn trio plays a groovy mix of salsa, Afrobeat and electronica with a little bit of rock ‘n’ roll thrown in. The band cites their local DJ culture and music scene as major influences; their relentless touring schedule and high-energy live shows are winning them enthusiastic crowds around the country.
Can Be Found: Pisgah Brewing, Saturday, April 23.
RIYD: Brand New Heavies, Jamiroquai.
You Should Go If: You and your roommate pretend to be domestic partners to save $18 a month on your gym memberships; the 51 Grill is naming a sandwich after you; you design and make all your own clothes, inspired by the outfits Prince wore in Purple Rain; your favorite childhood Easter memory is … that awesome Bible story where Jesus punks everyone.
The Suspect: Joe Buck Yourself
Country punker Jim Finkley performs solo under the stage name Joe Buck Yourself. As a former member of Th’ Legendary Shack Shakers he played the bass, drums and guitar parts on the 2003 release, Cockadoodledon’t. He left that gig for his current position as the snarling, scary upright bass player for both Hank III and Assjack.
Can Be Found: Stella Blue, Tuesday, April 26.
RIYD: Assjack, Captain Clegg & The Night Creatures.
You Should Go If: You think your mom might be screening your calls; you don’t understand why anyone would pay good money for a haircut, piercing or tattoo; your dad played chicken with oncoming cars to “wake your sorry ass up” on the way to school; your favorite childhood Easter memory is … when your family pretended that the baked turkey breast you ate at dinner was actually the Easter bunny.
