For a town of its size, Asheville has a remarkably active community of video-bloggers, multimedia activists and filmmakers. Starting this week, Xpress will be taking a regular look at this wealth of content. We’ll be searching for recently uploaded, “Asheville” tagged videos from video-sharing sites like YouTube, and sharing our findings.
And what better way to start off this decidedly eclectic, diverse group of videos than with a video of “Latin Belly Dancing,” presented by AskAsheville, and filmed at Asheville’s Scandal’s nightclub in celebration of Cinco De Mayo?
For all of you who thought that the Zombie Walk was the ne plus ultra of costumed events in Asheville, allow me to introduce you to the new hotness in collective costumed events: Aircrash survivors. It’s not as ghoulish as it sounds, though. “Keller Williams agents joined with other community volunteers to help create a realistic air disaster training simulation for the Asheville Regional Airport as well as local and state EMS and fire departments.” But it looks kind of fun. Check it out.
Next up, we have a little stand-up comedy from a recent No Shame Theatre event at the North Carolina Stage Company. While the quality of the jokes depends on your personal sensibilities and taste, I should warn you that much of the content is not work safe for language.
Speaking of the theatrical arts, here’s a dark little short film by IceHorseProductions about what happens when “a yoga studio becomes a playground for obsession and desire that unveils the true nature of human beings.”
And, just to leave you with a nice feeling of peace, here’s a video by decidedly “conservative” blogger ThunderPig, who has decided that there’s nothing particularly partisan about a nice, time-lapse view of the sky.
Of course, this is a handful of the dozens of interesting local videos uploaded just this week to YouTube, and a mere fraction of the Asheville-related videos available on the internet. Did we miss a particularly interesting, recently uploaded local video? Share it by leaving the videos URL (but not the embed code) in the comment fields below. Also, please mark it Not Work Safe if there’s any controversial content to the video.

Cranky Hanke said this one was an Academy Award winner! HA, HA!
Sooo…will URTV producers be getting a shout-out? There are still a _few_ around.
I’m so happy that parts of No Shame are on YouTube now, because I can’t stay up late enough to go.

Dale Joyner called for a membership meeting on April 29, 2009 at URTV Station. The camera is not at all focused on her,but she zeros in on it, and demands that she not be filmed. Well she wasn’t being focused on, yet when she puts herself in front of the camera she is indeed in the picture. She doesn’t want to be filmed at a meeting she called…what does that say about her?
URTV is publicly funded through PEG fees, so their facilities must be open to the public, and are subject to being filmed. All public facilities can be filmed. A meeting of the membership does fall under NC Open Meeting laws.
Davyne: You’ll need to use the URL itself, not the embed code. Our site won’t embed videos in the comments.
Sorry, hopefully this is better.
