In this fast-paced world we live in, it’s good to know that somewhere out there, people are still respecting time-gone-by by wearing bells on their shins, waving handkerchiefs and dancing while knocking sticks together. That’s right: I’m talking about Morris Dancing. AskAsheville caught the Asheville Morris Men doing their thing in downtown. I’d like to think we’re all the better for it.
Speaking of long-held local traditions, what about that newish tradition of beating drums and getting down at Pritchard Park on Friday evenings? It’s one of the coolest weekly events in downtown Asheville, but what if you can’t make it? Never fear, because AshevilleMusic has you covered. Here’s just under six minutes of djembe-heavy madness from a recent night of rhythm and all-out grooving.
Love the idea of tackling one of the local bike trails, but need a little convincing before you put foot to pedal? Mark File from RomanticAsheville gives us a first-person view of Point Lookout Trail, a greenway near Old Fort and Asheville in the Pisgah National Forest. And, unlike a real bike ride, there’s a sweet-disco funk soundtrack all along the way.
Of course, while Asheville has a reputation for being a cultural haven and a nature-lover’s paradise, that doesn’t mean that the city has no stomach for a good, old-fashioned, knock-down, drag-out fight. For instance, here’s a match from the recent “Smoky Mountain Brawl” presented by regional MMA group the Southern Fight League, which took place at the Asheville Civic Center earlier this month. The contest: Tommy “Trauma” Sauer fights Michael Hueser.
And last, but not least, let’s check in with vlogging duo Nick Tarlton and Jesse Hilton as they post their latest Rant of the Queens video blog. Now on their 60th installment, the couple talk about drag shows, make-up, traveling to Germany, smoking, Twitter addiction, their relationship and more. Some of the language is not work safe.
Of course, this is a only handful of the dozens of interesting local videos uploaded just this week to YouTube, and a mere fraction of the Asheville-related videos available on the Internet. Did we miss a particularly interesting, recently uploaded local video? Share it by leaving the videos URL (but not the embed code) in the comment fields below. Also, please mark it Not Work Safe if there’s any controversial content to the video.
Also, this column needs a catchy, hip name, so feel free to post your suggestions in the comments.
tks for the effort you put in here I appreciate it!
