This weekend on a shoestring

Yes, this is still the weekend on a shoestring, but a not-to-be-missed free event popped up on a Wednesday. So get your party on early and set the tone for the next several days worth of fun and inexpensive events (including a free MySpace Secret Show on Friday).

• Asheville vintage and vintage-reproductions shop Hip Replacements (72 N. Lexington Ave.) celebrates its anniversary. The party, from 6-9 p.m., includes $1-$5 racks of clothes (proceeds go to the Latino Advocacy Coallition), the first of what will be bi-monthly art openings with an exhibit by Ryan-Ashley Anderson and Molly Freeman, and performances by one-man blues rocker Shake it Like a Caveman and garage rockers Rubber Cushions (pictured).

Thursday, Oct. 15
• Hardworking indie-popsters Now You See Them join Greensboro’s Holy Ghost Tent Revival  (picture below by flyingrooster.net) for a double bill at Emerald Lounge (112 Lexington Ave., Asheville, 232-4372). NYST drummer Jason Mencer promises that at some points the two groups will join forces to become a Transformers-like supergroup of quirk-fabulousness. 10 p.m., $5.

Friday, Oct. 16
• Yes, it’s Lake Eden Arts Festival weekend in Black Mountain, but if you don’t want to make the drive or pay for the ticket, LEAF in Schools & Streets comes into Asheville for an early outreach show. The family-friendly event at the Orange Peel (101 Biltmore Ave., 225-5851) features Sones de México Ensemble (below). 11 a.m., $2 for children (age 17 and under), $3 for adults. Reservations at outreach@theLEAF.org or by calling 828/68-MUSIC (686-8742).

• World Zombie Day events kick off with a family-friendly Weenie Roast of the Living Dead at The Costume Shoppe (243 Haywood St., Asheville). Dress as a Zombie, either with the help of the Costume Shoppe or check this site for ideas. (Rumor has it the brain-craving zombies will be serving up veggie dogs along with carnivorous offerings.) 3 p.m.
Also from Zombie-central: “The West Asheville Zombie Pub Shamble (below) begins at 9 p.m. at the Westville pub on Haywood Road.  Come on down.  We’ll be shambling bar to bar until we reach the Admiral.”

• Push Skateshop & Gallery (25 Patton Ave., Asheville, 225-5509) hosts the opening of The Arts of Darkness exhibit, featuring work by Julie Ambruster, Rose Candella, Courtney Chappell, Alli Good and others. The exhibit runs through Tuesday, Nov. 3, but stop by for the opening when refreshments are provided and the mood is festive. 7-10 p.m.

• AC Entertainment joins with MySpace Secret Shows to bring heavy-hitters Baroness (below) to Stella Blue (31 Patton Ave., Asheville, 236-2424). Coliseum guests. The show is free, but on a first come, first serve basis, so get to the club early. Doors at 7 p.m., show at 8 p.m.

• Reggae DJ collective Earthtone Soundsystem returns to BoBo Gallery (22 Lexington Ave., Asheville, 254-3426). No word on showtime, but aim for 9 p.m.

Saturday, Oct. 17

• Biltmore Park Town Square‘s Fall Fest (located at I-26 exit 37 at Long Shoals Road, Asheville) is a day-long event (11 a.m.-5 p.m.) with storytellers, magicians, face painters, musicians, food vendors and retailers (there’s also a mention of roving Sesame Street characters). After dark, hang out for a concert by the Caribbean Cowboys, 7-9 p.m.

• Singer/songwriter Lorraine Conard (pictured) holds a CD-release party for her new album Riding on Your Wings. The show takes place at the Colonial Theater (53 Park St., Canton). 7 p.m., donations.

• Charlotte-based folk-rocker David Holtzclaw plays Well Bred Bakery (26 N. Main St., Weaverville, 645-9300). 7 p.m., free.

• Good to know: Downtown Asheville boutique Hunk recently changed its name to Parlour (9 Walnut St., 253-4044). The uber-cool shop offers not only ladies and gentlemens’ wear, but DJ and drink nights. Stop by for Philly’s DJ Justin Paul (7:30-9 p.m.) and Asheville’s DJ Dathan (pictured; performing 9-10:30 p.m.). Free — that’s the music and the local brews — while you shop.

• Chris Cates & the Master Plan plays beachy-mountainy-folky-rock at The Flat Rock Wine Shop (2702 Greenville Hwy., Suite C, Flat Rock, 697-6828). 9 p.m.

• Rocker Woody Wood (pictured) plays Westville Pub (777 Haywood Road, West Asheville, 225-9782). 9:30 p.m., free.

• Joshua Singleton (below) brings his Funky Four Corners back to Tressa’s (28 Broadway, Asheville, 254-7072). 10 p.m.

    I just got back from the Westville Pub. They charged me $7 for the Woody Wood concert, despite my pointing out this article.

    Don’t get me wrong: Woody is definitely worth $7 to see. But you might want to fact-check your material.
