New kid on the block

The Green Light Cafe is opening a downtown Asheville location. The original Green Light restaurant, once located in Black Mountain, closed in 2007. The owners of the vegetarian restaurant, Shannon and Michael Blair, have been catering and traveling the festival circuit with their mobile kitchen since then, and plan to continue doing so once the Asheville spot is well under way.

The new restaurant is to be located next to BoBo Gallery at 22 Lexington Ave. The two businesses share a common room, where seating will be provided for dining. Green Light patrons can sidle up to the bar, and BoBo barflies will have food within reach. Of particular interest to night owls is the fact that Green Light will keep late hours to match that of BoBo Gallery, at least when BoBo is featuring events. “We’re going to play it by ear,” says owner Michael Blair.

The menu at the Asheville restaurant, says Michael, will be similar to the menu served in the old Black Mountain space, Michael says. “We’ll basically be a soup-and-sandwich shop. We’ll have daily specials, smoothies and juices.” Easily carried items like pocket sandwiches will be available to grab and go.

Michael also reports that, while available, the restaurant will use all local and organic products. Menu items will include dishes like a sweet potato patty over rice with a spicy peanut sauce, or a three-cheese spinach lasagna. Nearly everything on the menu will be available vegan. The Green Light Cafe will be opening in late May or early June.

    Yay!! I only had the opportunity to eat at the Black Mountain location once but I remember it was really good! I can’t wait to try it again and welcome:)

    Yay. Festivilians will recognize these food folk from AmJam, Because You’re Asheville and lots of other fun events. Their food is excellent. Lexington Avenue is a great place for them.

    With Instant Karma moving up to that block of the street, a lot of the cooler stuff is moving closer to the center of town.
