• The festivities (in the form of pre-parties) kick off just two weeks from today with The Official Moogfest Kickoff Party, featuring King Britt (DJ Set).
Consequence of Sound and WNC Magazine are co-sponsores of the event, which will be held at The Southern (41 North Lexington Ave.), starting at 7 p.m.
Thursday, Oct. 28.
Says a press release, “If the name King Britt rings a bell, there’s a good reason for that. For one, he’s scheduled to perform at MoogFest on Friday night, where he’ll be performing alongside multimedia artist Rucyl, under the project name: Saturn Never Sleeps. But secondly, this Philadelphia-born DJ has been around the block – in a good way. He’s toured with Digable Planets (as “Silkworm”), his music’s been included on the likes of True Blood and Michael Mann’s underrated 2006 update of Miami Vice, and he founded Ovum Recordings. If that weren’t enough, he’s a huge collector of vintage synthesizers. Dare we say that he’s quite fitting for the weekend, huh?”
All Moogfest passholders get free entry (must have a bracelet or pass for entry). For non-pass holders it’s $10, first come, first served.
• Local band Eymarel — “an Organic/Electro Soul act that features members of local groups Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band, The Asheville Horns, and Afromotive. Members are: Mary Frances on Keyboards and Vocals, Lee Allen on Drums and Electronics, Derrick Johnson on Trombone, and Sean Smith on Trumpet. This show will also feature Casey Cramer(from Josh Phillips Folk Festival, Strut) on guitar” — hosts The MoogFest Pre-Party at MoDaddy’s (77 Biltmore Ave., Asheville) on Thursday, Oct. 28. 9 p.m., $5.
• Looking for an after party? Try this out — A Night of Stunning Sound: The Asheville Moogfest Afterparty event takes place Saturday, Oct. 30, 10 p.m.-4 a.m. at The Flood Gallery, River Arts District (109 Roberts Street, Asheville). $10, all proceeds go directly to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Artists include Jeff Nagel (aka. Spytek), Kris Krause, Ja’ Maul Redmond, Epic Beat Lab, Danny Peck (aka. dep).
From a press release: “The show is set to run until 4 a.m. and promises to deliver massive earsful of bass via a top-notch, custom-developed sound system provided by Charlotte-headquartered Core Technologies. On top of some of the most glorious, ear-tickling sound you’re likely to hear, you’ll also experience unique visual effects provided by OptiMystic video.
“Danny has described the event’s music as ‘live experiments in bass and electronica,’ meaning this isn’t your typical DJ event. Instead, the musicians involved are hoping to create something more interesting by creating live electronic music using instruments, synthesizers, and other digital and analog gadgetry.”
And the most recent Moogfest additions:
• The festival has added Shpongle to the Saturday lineup, performing a DJ set at the Asheville Civic Center from 1-2 a.m.

Following the screening of Moog, Herb Deutsch (co-collaborator on first Modular in 1963) and DJ Spooky, both of whom are featured in the documentary, will take part in a Q&A session with the audience. Admission to the film screening will be included in the price of a day or weekend pass.”
