The Orange Peel gets down and dirty Saturday as local hip-hop collective Gurp City South unite for a rowdy weekend showcase. Catching the entire outfit under one roof can be difficult, as members split their time between Asheville and San Francisco, so expect some fireworks.
From a release for the event: “Gurp City South is a hip-hop crew with one foot firmly planted in Asheville, N.C. and the other in San Francisco, C.A., with natives of both areas known to transplant between the mountains and the coast. Made up of several individuals and groups, each have cultivated their own unique sounds while retaining the common intelligent yet cynical, and sometimes political outlook of a wise old drunk, sort of like a Nick Nolte character set to vinyl. This is where Buchowski and Hunter S. Thompson meet Digital Underground and Outkast. Known for some of the rowdiest, most powerfully-energetic live shows anywhere, GCS brings an old school work ethic to a young man’s game, making it easily as relatable to the over-thirty hip-hop crowd that grew up on records and cassettes as it is to the iPod generation. It’s raw ruckus party music with enough clever writing to make you think … if that’s what you’re into. Saturday’s show at the Orange Peel will feature a rarely seen full lineup of the crew’s entire roster of San Francisco rap battle champion TopR, Foul Mouth Jerk, The Ville Boyz, Smidi, Adam Strange, DJ Football, and the Fist Fam, voted WNC’s #1 hip-hop act two consecutive years in the Mountain Xpress.”
