Smart Bets: Christmas with Dickens

Yes, Christmas Day has come and gone. Unless you're counting the 12 days of Christmas. Or, if you're a literary type and are celebrating Dickensian-style, which can extend well before or past actual Christmas. Blue Ridge Bookfest prolongs the holiday season with Christmas with Dickens: A Victorian Dinner with Entertainment. The idea for an evening built around Dickens' A Christmas Carol was thought up by the author's own great-grandson and Blue Ridge Bookfest follows his formula with "five short readings interspersed with fine food based on Victorian recipes and wines selected to complement each course." Held on Saturday, Jan. 7, 6:30 p.m. at The Cedars in Hendersonville. Tables can be set for four, six or eight guests, at $75 each ($40 tax deductible). Period attire is encouraged. Info and reservations at 693-9193.
