There are always plenty of ways to satiate your hunger and exercise those do-gooder muscles at the same time. Here are some opportunities to do just that around town in the next few weeks.
Yesterday, we wrote about the Chocolate and Talent Festival, which helps to make neo- and post-natal care more affordable and accessible for local families. We think it’s a great event and bears repeating.
Also, in a way to give back without spending any money or ingesting any extra calories, we present to you “Operation Pies for Troops,” a program launched by Tupelo Honey.
On Wednesday, Feb. 1, the restaurant will send 30 pies to soldiers in Afghanistan. All they need is your well-wishes. From the event’s Facebook page:
Over the holidays, we were asked to send one of our delish pecan pies to an American military unit stationed in Afghanistan. We received the sweetest email thank you!
So, we thought to ourselves, “What if we sent a bunch of pies to our troops in Afghanistan? Wouldn’t that be the best Valentine’s Day gift ever?” So, that’s what we’re going to do and we need your help.
On Feb. 1, we will be shipping 30 pies to American military units stationed in Afghanistan, to arrive in time for Valentine’s Day.
That’s where you come in. Visit the event’s Facebook page and write your well-wishes on the wall, whether you’ve got a soldier in mind or not. Tupelo Honey will ensure that the message gets delivered. That’s it!
And finally, Sunny Point Cafe in West Asheville is hosting a benefit for the Mad Divas, a youth roller derby team.
Team sports help encourage healthy confidence in girls, but the problem is that some girls aren’t into the team sports that schools organize. The Mad Divas Junior Derby was created last year as a fun alternative.
The Mad Divas team is a low-contact league for girls between 12 and 17, trained by members of the Blue Ridge Roller Girls. The team is part of the Junior Roller Derby Association, a public nonprofit educational and amateur sports organization.
The Mad Divas need to host a few fundraisers to appropriately crush the upcoming season, and Sunny Point Café has agreed to help. On Sunday Feb. 19, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., the cafe will host a pancake dinner with all proceeds going to the team. For $10, you’ll get a pancake dinner with local pork or veggie sausage, fresh fruit, coffee or tea. All proceeds will go directly to The Mad Divas.
For more information about Sunny Point Café, visit the restaurant’s website here.
