Have you tried surf kayaking? What about a rafting trip through the Grand Canyon in the depths of winter? Whether you’re an avid outdoors person or just interested in the natural world, experiencing adventure from the comfort of a brewery sounds pretty good this time of year.

Four short films will transport the audience to a world where scaling mountains and longboarding down Asheville’s many hills is possible for anyone who craves exhilaration. The mini film fest is exciting for two local organizations as well: RiverLink and Our VOICE will reap the benefits of this adventurous evening.

RiverLink is a natural fit: the nonprofit works to revitalize the French Broad River and its tributaries for both recreation and economic revitalization. Its Adopt-a-Stream program encourages average citizens to take pride in local streams and engage in clean-up days. “Adopt-a-Stream Teams are crucial in protecting our rivers, creeks, and streams and in reporting water pollution problems,” states the organization’s website.

Our VOICE provides takes a different approach to community involvement with crisis intervention for victims of sexual violence and prevention programs for Asheville-area residents. Together, these two organizations contribute to the health and vitality of Western North Carolina, and a night of short films is a great way to celebrate their efforts.

As if you needed an additional incentive, Legacy Paddlesports is donating a kayak to be raffled off to one lucky winner. Whether you’re ready to paddle your way through white waters or would rather meander through the French Broad River’s local streams, everyone is encouraged to get a taste of adventure on Thursday.

Photo: The Smokies: Punished into Ecstasy, a documentary about hiking the Appalachian Trail in the thick of winter, will headline the evening.
