From press release:
(ASHEVILLE)- Nine teachers from Buncombe County Schools have been selected to participate in the Governor’s Teacher Network, which was established to recognize and reward teachers who can help advance Race to the Top (RttT)‐funded educational remodeling efforts across the state.
Approximately 450 outstanding teachers from across North Carolina were selected to serve for one year as content experts and professional development creators/facilitators. Network teachers remain in their current roles but will also be helped to gain a deeper understanding of the State’s RttT‐funded work in one of two “pathways,” both related to the establishment of Home Base.
“These nine educators will be on the forefront of helping transform public education across our state,” said Associate Superintendent Susanne Swanger. “I congratulate each for their selection and very much look forward to seeing how they harness their individual expertise and channel their talents toward cooperatively developing more enriched instructional resources.”
Governor Pat McCrory, in partnership with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI), established the program with the intent of having teachers develop projects designed to spread understanding and use of new resources and practices in their schools and districts.
“We believe the fundamental goal should be focused on improving student outcomes. I am confident our teachers will keep this awareness throughout this worthwhile process,” Swanger said.
Network teachers were selected through a rigorous application process. They will receive specialized training related to their projects, support from NCDPI staff over the course of the year, and will be paid $10,000 for their work, which will take place from summer 2014 through spring 2015.
The nine teachers selected from Buncombe County Schools to participate in the Governor’s Teacher Network, listed in alphabetical order by last name, are:
Ashley Baker, West Buncombe Elementary School; Brian Maccarelli, Cane Creek Middle School; Erin McCully, Charles D. Owen Middle School; Kenneth McKee, Buncombe County Schools; Denise Perry, Johnston Elementary School; John Quick, Black Mountain Primary School; Amanda Reagan, West Buncombe Elementary School; Sharon Verdu, Charles D. Owen High School; and Loretta Wilson, Charles D. Owen Middle School.
