July programs at Youth OUTright

From a press release:

July programs at Youth OUTright

The fireworks may be spent before Youth OUTright’s first monthly meeting in July, but that doesn’t mean the fun’s over.  July’s programs will keep the sparks flying.  Programs are held every Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in downtown Asheville.

Sunday 7/6: Let’s celebrate ‘Inter-dependence day!’  This fun post-Independence Day celebration will include games and challenges that are designed to help us all recognize the value of supporting one another in our community.

Sunday 7/13: Poetry in Motion: Slam Asheville Youth Team.  YO will attend an afternoon of slam poetry at Asheville Community Theatre.  Proceeds from the event fund Slam Asheville Youth’s trip to the largest poetry competition in the world–Brave New Voices!  Youth Outright is covering admissions for our group, so let us know if you’re attending this Sunday!  Email al.murray@youthoutright.org or call (828) 785-3621.

Sunday 7/20: Movie night: How to Survive a Plague — the story of two coalitions — ACT UP and TAG (Treatment Action Group)—whose activism and innovation turned AIDS from a death sentence into a manageable condition.

Sunday 7/27: Justice 4 Jane:  Youth will learn about a grassroots movement seeking “justice for the 16-year-old transgender Latina girl who has been incarcerated in an adult prison without criminal charges.”  Jane was held in an adult facility over 2 months–spending much of that time in forms of solitary confinement.  Youth will have the opportunity to write letters and cards to Jane–a gesture Jane’s advocates and lawyers have been encouraging from her supporters.

Youth OUTright, WNC, Inc., a 501c-3, not-for-profit organization, offers discussion groups and social activities for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth, ages 14-23. Topics and activities are led by two trained facilitators. Youth OUTright’s mission is to empower LGBTQ youth to be confident and vital members of the greater community.  For additional information, please visit:  www.youthoutright.org
