If you think intense training and fierce competition is just for jocks, the high-energy, hardworking poets on the Slam Asheville Youth team will change your mind.
These young writers will bring their talents to a national stage in Philadelphia next week to compete at Brave New Voices, the largest poetry competition in the world. Last year, the small-town team placed 6th out of 50 competitors. The year before that (their first year in the competition) they secured a spot in the semi-finals. “They are among the top competitors and they have been training for a win,” says a press release for the event. “Support these young scholars as you would a sports team, a beer competition or an American Idol. These poets are really something.”
These talented teens will perform at the Poetry in Motion event at the Asheville Community Theatre on Sunday, July 13 at 2:30 p.m. Ticket sales will support the team with their travel expenses to Brave New Voices. $20. $10/student. Buy tickets here.
