DTA5 2012 lineup

The Asheville Downtown Association (celebrating its 25th anniversary) just announced the lineup for the 2012 Downtown After Five Series (held the third Friday of each month, May through September, on Lexington Avenue near the I-240 overpass). Each concert, which begins around 5:30 p.m., features a non-profit group that has been selected to receive the proceeds from wristband sales. Wristbands represent about $10,000 in revenue for local organizations.

May 18:

For the season’s first installment, it’s a locally-grown show. The headliner is rockers Velvet Truckstop (pictured) brings Grateful Dead keyboardist Tom Constanten to the stage with them. The soul-folk Kellin Watson Band (from Black Mountain) opens. Wristband sales recipient is Asheville GreenWorks.

June 15

Space Capone (pictured) launches 70s groove and 80s funk into the headlining slot. Also well-versed in funk and retro grooves is opener The Secret B-Sides, who are just about to release a new album in time for the summer. The wristband sales recipient is Katy’s Kids, a MANNA FoodBank organization geared toward helping children.

July 20

Sol Driven Train (pictured), from Charleston, says that their “music weaves through genres like images in a Tom Robbins paragraph.” What they do is jam — which works for the headlining slot at a street party. Reggae band Common Foundation opens. Proceeds from wristband sales go to the Asheville Buncombe Youth Soccer Association.

August 17

Simplified (pictured), from Charlotte, calls its sound “funky, reggae, roots rock n’ roll.” They’ll headline; Shane Pruitt Band (Delta blues, gospel and southern rock; currently working with Marshall Tucker Band) opens. The wristband sales recipient is Homeward Bound.

September 21

The Black Lillies (pictured), “Indie roots rock via Appalachia” from Knoxville headline. Haywood County-based country-rockers The Buchanan Boys open. Proceeds from wristband sales go to Blue Ridge Pride.

    Only one headliner from the Asheville area? If you aren’t going to let local bands headline, at least get some more well-known bands.
