Inaugural performance of “Story For Life” at ACT, Sept. 20

From a press release:

Inaugural performance of “Story For Life” at ACT, Sept. 20

Asheville’s most beloved playwrights and favorite actors come together to perform the stories of Asheville’s local senior citizens. Join us to celebrate the start of STORY FOR LIFE, a storytelling initiative designed to pair young people with Western North Carolina’s elderly population to collect their exciting stories from youth and then share them with the community at large on the ACT stage.

To commemorate the start of this community initiative, professional playwrights volunteered their time to meet with elderly members of the community and transform stories from their earlier days into short plays and monologues. Tales range from a Tennessee man fighting on the Pacific front in WWII to a local African-American woman recounting her first positive experience of integration in the 1960s.

Writers include an array of local talent: Emmy-award winners Maryedith Burrell, Brenda Lilly, and Patricia Greene, masters of the local storytelling scene Tom Chalmers and Waylon Wood, “Asheville’s bard” John Crutchfield, and NYC writer/actress and New Umbrella founder Elisabeth Gray.

Countless professional actors have volunteered their time to perform the STORY FOR LIFE short plays and monologues, including Flat Rock veteran Ralph Redpath, UNCA professor Laura Bond, C.J. Breland, Maria Mason, John Hall, Dusty McKeelan, and many more.

A silent auction will take place as well. All proceeds from ticket sales and auction support STORY FOR LIFE in Western North Carolina schools and universities.
