Eat a pig at the Junction

The Junction turns 1 this week, and it’s celebrating in style with a pig roast on Friday, May 18. We wrote about the event here. Festivities launch at 6 p.m., lasting until 11 p.m. Cost is $16 per person, with 15 percent of sales going directly to the Asheville Area Arts Council. Celebrate Edna’s grand opening with Kat Williams

Edna’s of Asheville, located at 870 Merrimon Ave. (previously Mountain Java), will hold a grand-opening celebration on Saturday, May 19. Festivities start at 10 a.m. on the front patio. Don’t worry — there’s plenty of coffee.

Representatives from the WNC Nature Center will be there too, with various four-legged friends in tow (proceeds for the entire day will go to support the Friends of the WNC Nature Center). Edna, the owners’ pet pug and namesake of the new café, will also hobnob with guests at the opening. Here she is:

Stick around until 6 p.m., when there will be a ribbon-cutting and gala featuring music from Kat Williams and complimentary food and drink.

Edna’s owners, Tom Cash (a former Starbucks executive) and Mike Zukoski (an engineer with a background at Disney Resorts) purchased Mountain Java earlier this year, along with a new coffee-roasting business they’ve dubbed “Bad Puppy Roasting.” 

According to a press release, Edna’s boasts an updated modern decor, an expanded food menu with a variety of sandwiches and salads, house-baked goods and extended evening hours with live entertainment. Soon, a variety of wine and local beer on tap will also be available.

For serious coffee junkies, here’s more good news: Edna’s is open seven days a week, 365 days a year from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. Visit the website for more information.

Go local with ASAP

The growing season is nearing full swing. To celebrate — and to help local food lovers find and support local farms and businesses that support them — ASAP releases a yearly Local Food Guide. The guide is a core component of ASAP’s decade-long local food campaign; more than one million copies have been distributed since 2002.

On Sunday, May 20, from 2 until 6 p.m., celebrate the release of the newest edition of ASAP’s Local Food Guide at Highland Brewing Company. The event will feature local food (of course), music from Vollie & Kari and the Wildcats and plenty of Highland brews. Suzy Philips of Gypsy Queen Cuisine will also offer farm-fresh dishes.

While you’re there, make sure to grab the fresh-off-the-presses guide (updated with more tailgate market and CSA listings than ever before, plus ASAP-partner restaurant listings) and the second edition of the Local Food Guide for Kids, created by ASAP’s Growing Minds Farm-to-School program.

The release party is free and open to the public. Early-bird attendees will each receive a “certified local” t-shirt (while supplies last).
