Pan Harmonia celebrates La Belle Epoque

La Belle Epoque truly was a “beautiful era.” The years between 1890 and World War I were filled with optimism and ingenuity throughout Europe, but especially in France. Art Nouveau’s luxurious curves dominated the art world and both classical and salon music reached a new crescendo.

Pan Harmonia will highlight the music of this lavish period at a performance of Musique de La Belle Epoque: Sumptuous and Sublime. This chamber concert will feature works by Joseph Suk, Caesar Cui and Mel Bonis, along with Eric Satie’s Gnossiennes for solo piano, which was featured in the Martin Scorsese film Hugo.

Flutist Kate Steinbeck, violinist Amy Lovinger and pianist Kimberly Can will bring this elegant music to life on Sunday, June 10 at 5 p.m. at The Altamont Theater. This is just one of the concerts Pan Harmonia has planned for June.

Later in the month, Baroque Vibes, a “genre-smashing” program that “transcends the boundaries of the traditional Baroque setting” will feature Elizabethan-era music including works by J.S. Bach and G.P. Telemann, along with pieces by mid-20th century songwriter Alec Wilder and tango master Astor Piazzola.
