New website helps voters find local representatives’ record on fracking

New website helps voters find local representatives’  voting record on fracking, make informed choice at the polls

Asheville, N.C. — With Election Day weeks away and many voters still gathering information, a new, locally created website helps North Carolina voters easily identify where state and local legislators stand on fracking.

FindYourFracker.org allows voters to search for local and state politicians, and see their voting history on a variety of bills related to fracking, the controversial practice of fracturing rock with chemicals under pressure to extract fossil fuels more easily.  Representatives who come down strongly on either side of the issue are labeled “anti-fracker” or “fracker.”

“You just type in your home address, click, and see how select representatives have voted on this issue, plain and simple,” said lead site designer Peter Brezny, the local tech entrepreneur behind Purplecat Networks, an Asheville web hosting company.

“This is not a fracking education website,” Brezny said. “It’s not made to please voters of a particular affiliation. It’s made for people making a decision, who wherever they are on the political spectrum, are uncomfortable with what fracking represents for North Carolina well water and water quality.”

Website creators are counting on something that crosses all political boundaries in our state: well water drinkers’ need for clean, potable water for their families.

While the site’s creators acknowledge an anti-fracking agenda, the mission of Find Your Fracker is ultimately nonpartisan: to provide easy access to factual information about political leaders charged with making decisions that directly impact residents’ health, land, and water quality.

Brezny plans to expand the site to cover every state in the nation where fracking is happening or might begin. Currently, the site offers information about North Carolina alone.
