Asheville-based avant-rock outfit Ahleuchatistas will keep things local with the release of their upcoming LP, their second since reconfiguring as a duo and their seventh overall. Heads Full of Poison, the follow-up to last year’s jagged, jarring Location, Location, is set for CD release on Sept. 25 via Cuneiform Records, but the album will be available in double LP format soon after courtesy of Harvest Recordings, the label end of Asheville music shop Harvest Records.
The energy of Ahleuchatistas has increased considerably since their switch to the duo format in 2010. The aggressive textures and angular momentum of guitarist Shane Perlowin collide powerfully with the off-kilter rhythms of drummer Ryan Oslance. The resulting sonic experiments are both kinetic and immersive, expressions of brute force that are equally appreciable for their tonal variety. Those techniques will be on local display when Ahleuchatistas celebrate the release of Heads Full of Poison Oct. 5 at The Grey Eagle alongside The Critters and Common Visions. The band was also recently added to the line-up for this year’s Moogfest, which hits downtown Asheville on Oct. 26 and 27.
The vinyl release continues an unusually busy stretch for Harvest Recordings. Already this year, they’ve partnered with Removador Recordings and Solutions, the imprint of My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James, to release the latest LP from Black Mountain’s funky, lo-fi Floating Action. Harvest’s two 2012 releases represent their first output since a vinyl re-release of Steve Gunn’s Sundowner in 2010.
