Local brewers hoping to put Charleston on the craft beer map

ASHEVILLE – Dubbed Beer City USA for its smorgasbord of 20 breweries – equal to all of South Carolina – this mountain town has capitalized on America’s craft beer boom in a way that no other Southern locale can claim.
Asheville’s recent luring of three huge craft brewers has turned heads among South Carolina officials and politicians, who hope to emulate their northern neighbor’s success.
The Southeast, with its Bible Belt aversion to vice and holdover Prohibition-era laws limiting alcohol sales, has been the last region to embrace the trend, and the Palmetto State has lagged even its late-arriving neighbors. But that changed with the passage this year of the so-called Stone bill, which sought to lure Escondido, Calif.-based Stone Brewing’s planned East Coast expansion to South Carolina by repealing what many view as antiquated laws.
