New year, new clubs

Is one of your New Year’s resolutions to meet new people and try new things? Of course it is! In honor of the new year, Xpress did a little digging and added a slew of clubs and groups to its community calendar.

Here are a few highlights of the clubs WNC has to offer. Visit www.mountainx.com/events for a full list. Dates and times have been confirmed, but it’s a good idea to double check before attending your first meeting. If you know of other clubs in the area, add them in the comments.

Asheville Area Anime offers “geeky films and fun” at Firestorm Cafe, 48 Commerce St. Free. Info: www.firestormcafe.com or 255-8115. Saturdays, 3 p.m.

Asheville Chess Club meets at the North Asheville Community Center, 37 E. Larchmont Drive. Children’s club meets from 5:15-6:30pm. $5 per session. Info: www.wncchess.org or 299-3715. Wednesdays, 6:30-10:30 p.m.

Asheville Scrabble Club meets at Atlanta Bread Company North, 633 Merrimon Ave. Info: www.ashevillescrabble.com. Sundays, 2-6 p.m.

Astronomy Club of Asheville meets in UNCA’s Reuter Center. See website for stargazing events. $20 per year. Info: www.astroasheville.org. 1st Thursdays, 7-9 p.m.

Asheville Free Media community radio station meets for a monthly mixtape swap and general meeting at DeSoto Lounge, 504 Haywood Road. Bring a CD or tape to share and take one home. Info: www.ashevillefm.org. 4th Saturdays, noon.

Blue Ridge Toastmasters Club aims to “develop speaking and leadership skills in a supportive environment.” Meets at Asheville Chamber of Commerce/Lenoir Rhyne University, 36 Montford Ave., Room 317. Info: www.facebook.com/blueridgetoastmasters. Mondays, 12:15-1:20 p.m.

Frugal Artist Meetup presents art films at Swannanoa Valley Fine Arts League’s Red House Studios and Gallery, 310 W. State St., Black Mountain. No need to bring supplies. $5/$1 members. Info: www.svfalarts.org or marilyndesigns@charter.net. 3rd Tuesdays, 6-8 p.m.

Sisters in Stitches sewing group meets at The Drygoods Shop, 474 Haywood Road. Free. Info: www.meetup.com/sisters-in-stitches. 3rd Saturdays, 1 p.m.

Smoky Mountain Chess Club invites players of all levels to participate in friendly competition at Blue Ridge Books, 152 S. Main St., Waynesville. Free. Info: www.blueridgebooksnc.com or 456-6000. Thursdays, 1-4 p.m.

Western Carolina Amateur Radio Society meets monthly at the West Asheville Library, 942 Haywood Road. $20 for year-long membership; meetings free to attend. Info: www.wcars.org, 254-0513 or wd4cnz@charter.net. 1st Thursdays, 7 p.m.

Youth OUTRight offers weekly discussion groups and social activities for LGBTQ youth at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 20 Oak St. www.youthoutright.org. Sundays, 4-6 p.m.
