City Council and Buncombe Commissioners to meet in joint session, Aug. 18

Nonprofit agencies will make their case for funding from Buncombe County's upcoming budget for Fiscal Year 2018. A total of 46 nonprofits are asking for an aggregate of almost $11 million.

Although Asheville City Council members and Buncombe County commissioners frequently attend the same meetings and community events, it’s been at least two years since the two bodies met in an official joint session, says Asheville City Clerk Maggie Burleson.

Finding a meeting time that works for the seven county commissioners, six City Council members and the mayor is challenging, according to Burleson. But she believes that most of the city and county officials will be present for the joint meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 18, at 4:30 p.m., in the first floor conference workroom of the County Administration Building, located at 200 College St., downtown Asheville.

After welcoming remarks by County Chair David Gantt and Mayor Esther Manheimer, County Manager Wanda Greene and City Manager Gary Jackson will present a summary of partnerships between Buncombe County and the City of Asheville.

Assistant County Manager and Health and Human Services Director Mandy Stone will give an update on the new Family Justice Center, which is slated to open at 35 Woodfin St., downtown, in 2016.

According to the website of the Buncombe County Service Foundation, the purpose of the new center is to provide a coordinated community response to domestic and sexual violence. The Asheville Police Department and Buncombe County Sheriff Office’s domestic and sexual violence units will have offices on site, as will Helpmate, Our VOICE, Health and Human Services and Mission Hospital.

Assistant Buncombe County Manager and Planning Director Jon Creighton will give an update on downtown capital construction.

Cathy Ball, executive director of Planning & Multimodal Transportation, and Stephanie Monson-Dahl, Riverfront Redevelopment Office director, both with the City of Asheville, will report on the Economic Development Capital Improvement Program and Innovation Districts.

The final agenda item is scheduling the next joint meeting of the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners and Asheville City Council. Burleson noted Monday that the goal of the two governing bodies is to hold annual joint meetings.
