Local motion picture nonprofit Mechanical Eye Microcinema is calling for ten minute film submissions from local amateur filmmakers to be shared at its upcoming opening screening event on Tuesday, December 15 at 8 p.m. at the Asheville Contemporary Dance Theatre’s Bebe Theatre in downtown Asheville. Local cinematographers will have the chance to screen a short film or segment from a longer piece before a live audience and receive feedback from fellow filmmakers and enthusiasts, according to a press release from Mechanical Eye Microcinema.
“Mechanical Eye Microcinema’s goal is to help unify our film community by bringing together filmmakers and film enthusiasts,” say the organizers of the event, who plan to host monthly screenings of “independent, experimental, avant-garde, and documentary films and videos” to “[cultivate] an adventurous community of filmmakers and film lovers through community workshops and discussions.”
Submissions can be entered under several formats, including digital mp4 or mov files, as well as DVD and VHS video.”We can also show film,” the organizers report, “but if you’re bringing celluloid, please let us know in advance so we have the right projector for your work!”
Each film will be followed by a question and answer period to allow for feedback and suggestions from the audience. The event is open to film enthusiasts and the general public as well.
Submissions can be entered either online by emailing mechanicaleyemicrocinema@gmail.com or in person the day of the event. “We’d prefer h.264 compressed quicktime movies — you can email, dropbox, WeTransfer, or send us a download link,” say organizers. “We can play other files, too – so if you have a question about how to format your video or if we can show it, please send us an email!”
Submissions are first come, first serve; the screening is allotted 90 minutes, including discussion periods. Each cinematographer is limited to one submission per screening.
Mechanical Eye encourages amateur filmmakers to “Bring your films… good, bad, and ugly. That crazy movie you made when you were a kid? The masterpiece you just finished in art school? The in progress short you’re working on in town? Yes, yes, yes!!”
