“What’s compelling is the raw power of the band, from their light moments to full-out jamming,” says Tauk’s grammy-winning producer, Robert Carranza (Jack Johnson, Mars Volta). “Music is a language that some feel and others speak — and Tauk do both very well.”
Tauk’s producer isn’t the only one who thinks highly of the NYC-based band. The instrumental quartet has gained a significant DIY following opening for bands like moe. and Tea Leaf Green, as well as playing at festivals including Bonnaroo, Hangout Music Fest and Gathering of the Vibes.
Tauk’s cover of the Beatles classic, “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” topped CBS Radio’s list of favorite Beatles cover videos.
The band is Matt Jalbert (guitar), Charlie Dolan (bass), Alric “A.C.” Carter (keyboard/organ), and Isaac Teel (drums). All of the members except Teel have been playing together since middle school — and those years of practice show. The band eschews vocals, instead keeping the focus on its expert instrumentals. As one critic from The Deli puts it, “… the quartet has a rare ability to channel emotional melodic leads, and all without a lead singer.”
Lovers of Phish- and Lotus-style jamming will want to check out Tauk on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at the Orange Peel as they tour in support of their second album, Homunculus. And while the group can easily be compared to those quintessential, big-name jam bands, the group offers an eclectic and experimental blend of funk, jazz, pop and rock that is completely their own.
