Citizen-Times: Asheville looking at vacation rentals

From the Asheville Citizen-Times:

ASHEVILLE — Listings for short-term vacation rentals in some of the city’s nicest neighborhoods entice renters with terms like “convenient,” “a quiet and peaceful escape” and “one of Asheville’s most prestigious locations.”

They don’t include a phrase that is less inviting, but at least as true: “May violate city rules.”

Dozens of homes in Asheville rent for periods as short as a night or two despite city zoning rules that prohibit the practice in most residential neighborhoods.

That’s prompted a push by owners of some of the properties to loosen the rules and a push back from neighborhood advocates who say short-term vacation rentals can be a nuisance.

Again, Mr Peck sees through the clutter to the ultimate reality. Such perspicacity should be rewarded. Has Ayn Rand created some sort of atheist heaven that he could visit or relocate to altogether? One can hope.

We talk about the lack of affordable housing in Asheville all the time, yet “dozens of homes” are being kept off the list of available rental homes, presumably because their owners see greater dollar signs in catering to tourists.

Loosen the rules? Time to tighten them up and enforce them, if you ask me.
