Buncombe students in Google’s Gravity Games

Buncombe Co., NC) – A Buncombe Co. student team will be among more than 30 from throughout the state slated to compete on April 5 in downtown Lenoir as part of the fourth annual NC Gravity Games http://www.ncgravitygames.com/ , a STEM-education racing extravaganza sponsored by Google and Appalachian State University.

Students from Buncombe Co.’s Owen Middle School will join a wide range of competitors hailing from Mount Airy and Murphy to High Point and Fayetteville to Goldsboro and Rockingham, among others. The Gravity Games are a real-world experience in which students from across the state use STEM lessons (science, technology, engineering and math) to build and race their own gravity-powered cars in downtown Lenoir, NC, home to Google’s data center. The checkered flag flies on April 5; the deadline for registration is March 22.

The 2014 Gravity Games will feature new or expanded scientific exhibits from Discovery Place in Charlotte and the Catawba Science Center in Hickory. Food stands and other activities will also keep racers and revelers fueled up on fun. The Gravity Games are a signature event of the NC Science Festival.

Prizes include bragging rights, tech goodies, medals and trophies — plus the pride in being recognized as STEM superstars.
