“Rent parties” began in Harlem in the 1920s, when tenants hired a band to play and then “passed the hat” among guests to raise money to pay their high rent. In that same spirt of helping others with their housing needs, Will Morris and Wells Fargo, LLC are presenting a Rent Party fundraiser on May 5, 2016, that benefits Pisgah Legal Services.
The party begins at 5:30 pm at the YMI Cultural Center in downtown Asheville. Tickets are $20/person and include southern food by Green Opportunities, wine, and craft beer by Hi-Wire Brewing. The Rent Party supports Pisgah Legal Services work to help thousands of low-income families in WNC keep decent, safe and affordable housing. Last year, more than 4,000 people from across the mountains came to the nonprofit law-firm for help securing housing and avoiding homelessness.
Each year, Pisgah Legal Services helps more than 15,000 low-income people meet their basic needs, such as protection from domestic violence, avoiding homelessness, finding safe housing, and accessing health care and subsistence income. Pisgah Legal Services has 18 attorneys on staff, and relies heavily on the pro bono legal services of 300+ volunteer attorneys and the help of more than 50 office volunteers. PLS’ main service area includes six counties in WNC, with offices in Asheville, Brevard, Hendersonville, and Rutherfordton.
