Wedge building pop-up gallery announces hours of operation

PRESS RELEASE FROM EVENT ORGANIZERS:

Charleston’s John Duckworth is the featured artist at a new pop-up gallery in the John Duckworth in Asheville’s River Arts District. After a successful public opening Saturday evening, Duckworth at the Wedge will now be open to the public throughout the week.

The pop-up gallery includes works from Awake, Duckworth’s most recent show in the City Gallery at Waterfront Park in Charleston. Far from the typical gallery exhibit,

Awake was an immersive art experience that aimed to engage visitors in ways they might not expect – ways that he hoped would make viewing the art work more meaningful and thought provoking. He plans to bring some of that same energy to his show at the Wedge, including his photographic landscape abstractions, which people often mistake for paintings. “I like that they present as paintings,” said the artist. “That’s part of my intention. I got my first camera in second grade. At this point I think of myself as painting with the camera.”

Duckworth’s approach to art and the work itself is informed by a

spiritual journey that led him to Eastern contemplative thought and meditation. His immersion in Zen and Tibetan Buddhism began to seep into his painting and several of his

Buddha images are on display at Duckworth at the Wedge. These layered images include multiple artistic techniques: screen printing, oil painting, airbrush and photography.

His partner in this pop-up gallery venture is local producer Andrew Simpson. The two first met while on a bike ride with mutual friends several years ago. Simpson was already a fan of Duckworth’s work.

“I was really drawn to John’s approach to art,” said Simpson. “And when I saw the breadth of his work I knew we had to find the right space in Asheville to mount an exhibit. We are bringing something different to the area
and a traditional gallery wouldn’t be the right fit. We’re excited to be located at the space at the Wedge where John Payne’s legacy is a blueprint for the burgeoning arts
community in the RAD.”

Duckworth at the Wedge Hours of Operation: Monday: 5pm to 8pm

About John Duckworth

Duckworth’s artistic practice extends across many roles, from filmmaker and graphic designer, to photographer and painter. Formally trained in painting and photography, Duckworth received his B.A. in Studio Art from the College of Charleston after a brief foray into biological science, an influence still evident in his subject matter today.

After experiencing a spiritual transformation in the past few years, Duckworth began exploring new territories. He now channels his Buddhist practice through a Western lens and has produced the “Tunes and Whispered” series that incorporates the dualities of Eastern and Western cultures through harmonized compositions of screen printing, painting, drawing, photography, and video.

Duckworth’s multidisciplinary practice is based in seeking a balance between inner peace and the chaos of contemporary society.

John Duckworth lives and works between Charleston, SC and New York City.

Duckworth has exhibited widely, including solo exhibitions at cueB Gallery, London; Hagedorn Foundation Gallery, Atlanta; Robert Lange Studios, Charleston; and Jennifer Hunt Gallery, Birmingham, AL. Duckworth has exhibited at Art Basel Miami and has been featured in group shows in Charleston at the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art and The Gibbes Museum of Art.
