Meridee Mucciarone, co-owner of Great Harvest Bread Co., takes pride in making bread from scratch. “Our bread doesn’t have any preservatives,” she says. “It’s made fresh every day … in the store mill.”
Beginning Thursday, Nov. 12, the shop will host a three-day bread swap, an event that encourages residents to bring in their store-bought, processed loaves (opened or unopened) and exchange them for fresh bread from Great Harvest Bread Co. Unopened loaves will be added to the store’s weekly contributions to Western Carolina Rescue Ministries.
“A lot of people who have trouble digesting breads find it easier to digest ours,” Mucciarone says. “It kind of supports the idea that, for some people, it’s not the bread itself but the additives that are causing problems. Which makes a lot of people happy, because they love bread.”
Mucciarone operates the store with her husband, Kirk, and son, Steven. While the family-run business is part of a national chain based in Dillon, Montana, Mucciarone points out that her store operates as what the company calls a “freedom franchise.” The arrangement, she says, “lets each store do its own thing.”
Through the bread swap, Mucciarone hopes to introduce locals to the products available at Great Harvest Bread Co., including its honey whole wheat bread, the seed-laden Dakota loaf, an asiago-pesto swirl, cheddar-jalapenol loaf and more. “I hope people will come by, try and … love our breads,” Mucciarone says.
The bread swap runs Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 10-12, at Great Harvest Bread Co., 1838 Hendersonville Road. Hours are 7 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Thursday-Friday and 7 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday. For more information, visit greatharvestashevillenc.com.
