China on Screen: Politics, Commerce and Identity – UNC Asheville’s Jinhua Li to Present World Affairs Council Talk on April 3
The World Affairs Council of Western North Carolina will present a talk, China on Screen: Politics, Commerce and Identity, by UNC Asheville Assistant Professor of Chinese Studies and Language Jinhua Li, at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 3 at the Reuter Center at UNC Asheville. Admission is $10 for the public; free to members of the World Affairs Council and UNC Asheville students.
Li, who teaches Chinese language and leads UNC Asheville students in study abroad trips to China, also teaches courses on Chinese cinema, and East Asian literature. The most recent of her many journal articles, In Search of an Alternative Feminist Cinema: Gender, Crisis, and the Cultural Discourse of Nation Building in Chinese Independent Films, was published in ASIANetworkExhange, a peer-reviewed Asian studies publication. She received her Ph.D. in comparative literature from Purdue University, specializing in comparative cinema studies, transnational cultural studies and gender politics.
The final World Affairs Council event of the spring semester at UNC Asheville will take place on May 1 – a talk titled The Challenges of Long-Term Humanitarianism: Lessons from the Palestinian Experience, by Ilana Feldman, professor of anthropology, history and international affairs at the Elliott School of International Affairs at The George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
The World Affairs Council lectures at UNC Asheville are presented in partnership with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UNC Asheville (OLLI), and the university’s Department of Political Science.
