During the last weekend in July, under beautiful sunny skies, a record 168 art enthusiasts attended the Rosen Sculpture Walk with the Jurors. This year’s jurors, Daniel T. Beck and Ian Henderson, both from the Penland School of Crafts, offered participants a compelling narrative of each sculpture as the group visited each of the ten works located on campus in the vicinity of the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts.
The winners of the Martin & Doris Rosen 32nd Rosen Sculpture Competition are as follows:
- First Place $3,000: Richard Herzog, “It’s all about Electricity,” Steel, Sarasota, FL
- Second Place $2,000: Susan Moffatt, Succulent II, Marble on granite and steel base, Chapel Hill, NC
- Third Place. $1,000: Beau Lyday, Gothic Doorway, Wood, tin, steel, Valdese, NC
- Honorable Mention: Jacob Burmood, Draped Fabrication, Bronze on steel base, Ottawa, KS
Turchin Center curator Mary Anne Redding expressed that “jurors Beck and Henderson spent considerable time with each accepted sculpture examining craft, message, and impact. Many of our visitors left saying they learned more on this tour than they had in years – a compliment to Ian and Daniel’s friendly and knowledgeable articulation, as well to each artist’s incredible attention to fine craftsmanship in their sculptures.”
Juror Daniel T. Beck hopes that “everyone who attended the talk takes away the idea that public sculpture is an opportunity to notice something new and exciting about our environment and ourselves. The idea that the rewards a person can enjoy from closer inspection, can translate from a piece of sculpture to just about anything that piques our interest. This experience has reminded me to always look deeper, keep asking questions, and make a concerted effort to try and notice something that I may have overlooked in the past.”
For the last 32 years, the annual Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition & Exhibition has showcased contemporary American sculpture in outdoor settings across the campus of Appalachian State University. This national juried competition is presented by An Appalachian Summer Festival and the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts.
Two additional sculptures are included– one on campus at Appalachian House and the other at the Blowing Rock Art & History Museum (BRAHM) at 159 Chestnut St., Blowing Rock. All twelve sculptures will be on view through May 2019.
