Press release from Mills River Presbyterian Church:
Throughout the month of December, Mills River Presbyterian Church will host several events that are open to the public.
A Children’s Pageant will be held during the 11:00am worship service on Sunday, December 9th followed by a potluck holiday luncheon.
On Sunday, December 16th special Holiday Music from the Adult Choir will be showcased during the 11:00am worship service. At 1:30pm on that same date people are invited to join in local Christmas Caroling in the community for the afternoon.
A highlight of the holiday season will be the Traditional Moravian Lovefeast and Candle Service held on Sunday, December 23rd during the church’s 11:00am service. The Lovefeast includes a celebration of good will and fellowship, hallmarked by traditionally-clad people serving coffee and Lovefeast buns to people in their church pews. Lovefeast buns are made from a recipe which includes citron and orange peel as flavoring. The coffee is mixed with sugar and cream and served in simple, white porcelain mugs that have been used in almost all American Moravian Churches over time.
The candles used in the service are hand-poured beeswax and tallow from tin molds that have been handed down through the generations. They have been hand-wrapped (trimmed) in flame-proof crepe paper by church members to prevent hot wax from dripping onto the holder’s hands. The Moravian custom of distributing lighted candles during a church service was begun in Germany in 1747.
On Monday, December 24th, Mills River Presbyterian Church will host a one-hour Christmas Eve Service at 5:00pm. The one-hour Candlelight and Communion Service is family-friendly and people of all ages are invited to attend.
Mills River Presbyterian Church is located at 10 Presbyterian Church Road in Mills River, accessible from School House Road. For more information, call 828-891-7101.
