John Daves has been selected as the new principal for grades 9-12 at Carolina Day School

Press release from Carolina Day School:

ASHEVILLE, NC, December 13, 2018 — Carolina Day School (CDS) announced that, after a national search, Dr. John Daves will become the new principal of its upper school for grades 9-12. Daves, who will join CDS on July 1, 2019, succeeds Peggy Daniels, retiring at the end of the 2018-19 academic year after 34 years in education.

Kirk Duncan, head of school at CDS said, “We are grateful to Peggy Daniels for her decades of service to the community, including serving as upper school principal for the last five years.

“Dr. Daves’ affinity for students, his administrative experience at schools of excellence, and his extensive history as a teacher and leader have prepared him well to be our next upper school principal.”

After receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, Daves earned a Master of Arts and Teaching degree in English Literature from Colgate University in Hamilton, New York. He went on to earn a doctorate in American Studies from The University of Maryland, College Park.

Daves’ professional path to CDS included teaching English at Friends’ Central School in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania; serving as a teaching assistant at University of Maryland, College Park; and serving as an Assistant Professor in American Studies at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Dr. Daves continued his independent school career at Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire teaching English, where he also created the vision for the Exeter Diversity Institute for independent school teachers and administrators. Daves then served as the Director of Diversity and Inclusion and English teacher at Park Tudor School in Indianapolis, Indiana, and is currently the Dean of Faculty at his alma mater, The Pennington School in Pennington, New Jersey.

Daves is looking forward to the role, saying, “I hope sharing my educational experiences within the school community will further conversations about how learning at Carolina Day School inspires students to pursue their dreams and to lead purposeful lives.”
