UPDATED: Local poet and activist announces Black History Month presentations

TEACHING BLACK HISTORY: Local poet and activist Robert "Zack" Zachary plans a series of talks and discussions on how black history should be taught.

Local activist, poet, storyteller, chaplain and retired therapist Robert “Zack” Zachary announces a series of events relating to Black History Month:

Thursday, Feb. 7. The Proper and More Effectual Method on the Teaching of Afro-American History: A pictorial presentation of combined poetry, storytelling, expressive thought, musical expressions and dialogue, with audience participation. The BLOCK off Biltmore, 39 S. Market St., Asheville, 5:30-8:30 p.m.

Saturday, Feb. 9. Storytelling and poetry: The Proper and More Effectual Method on the Teaching of African-American History; and Dialogue Café: Getting America Talking Again — an open dialogue on subjects confronting us. Firestorm Books & Coffee, 610 Haywood Road, Asheville, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Sunday, Feb 10. Hosting Asheville FM [103.3 FM]. An open interview, storytelling and dialogue on Afro American Hidden History. Storytelling and poetry: The Proper and More Effectual Method on the Teaching of African-American History; Dialogue Café: Getting America Talking Again — an open dialogue on subjects confronting us; along with two other community scholars on the subject. 1-2 p.m.

Update: The Thursday, Feb. 21, event that had been scheduled for The BLOCK off Biltmore is no longer taking place, and a new local event has been added:

Saturday, Feb. 23. The Proper and More Effectual Method on the Teaching of Afro-American History: A presentation combining poetry, storytelling, expressive thought, music and dialogue, with audience participation. Firestorm Books & Coffee, 610 Haywood Road, Asheville, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Please note: Most of the Asheville events call for a $15 contribution or donation, with all being invited and none turned away.
