The United States is a nation whose people belong to many different faith traditions or to no particular faith tradition. Giving thanks is a common element to all faith traditions. Different traditions have particular ways of expressing thanks. This Community Interfaith Thanksgiving Celebration provides an opportunity to experience the variety of ways that Americans of many faith traditions give thanks.
In current American culture a dominant cultural Christianity often pushes the people of other faith traditions to the margins. This event is an effort to affirm the freedom to practice any religion in this nation and that those religions are welcomed and valued.
This event was planned by an ad hoc group of people (both clergy and lay) from a variety of traditions. It is not associated with any other ecumenical or interfaith group.
The Gathering will be hosted by Congregation Beth Israel (229 Murdock Ave, Asheville) and will include music by Billy Jonas and David LaMotte. Individuals from a wide variety of traditions will briefly share the place that giving thanks has in their tradition and particular ways thanks is expressed. Those attending are invited to bring non-perishable food items that will be collected and given to the ministry of Beloved Asheville.
This is the first such event in Asheville in over a decade.
