Babies Need Bottoms will celebrate its second birthday on November 12, 2019 with an ice cream social and fundraiser at The Hop Ice Cream Café in North Asheville (640 Merrimon Ave.) From 6-9p.m., The Hop will generously donate a portion of sales to Babies Need Bottoms to help families experiencing diaper need.
Diaper need, or not having enough diapers to keep your child clean, dry and healthy effects 1 in 3 families across the United States. Just like food and housing, diapers are essential material needs for babies and young children, with serious negative consequences for child health and parental mental health when they are unmet. In Western North Carolina, Babies Need Bottoms Diaper Bank is working in partnership with social service agencies to meet this need for local families.
Since its founding in November 2017, Babies Need Bottoms diaper bank has distributed 77,251 total diapers.
Diapers are expensive, costing between $70-$80 a month per child. Infants use up to 12 diapers a day and toddlers up to 8 diapers a day, on average. For low-income families, this amounts to a huge monthly expense that is not covered by government assistance programs. Not having enough diapers is a huge stress for families and puts babies at risk for skin infections and other issues associated with staying in dirty or wet diapers for too long. Most daycares require parents to supply diapers, so without an adequate supply of diapers, parents may miss work or school.
Having an adequate supply of diapers improves child health, mitigates parental stress, and helps free up financial resources for other basic needs like rent, utilities and medicine. Babies Need Bottoms diaper bank is working in partnership with local businesses to raise awareness about diaper need and to raise funding to bulk-purchase diapers to help local families.
