Local nonprofit Asheville Music School is finding new ways to keep the music going during this time of social separation. Online live streaming lessons via virtual chat room have helped students and teachers stay connected. The platform creates an instant connection, and lets teachers easily share sheet music and videos with their students. “We’ve created a unique and very user-friendly system,” says AMS Executive Director Ryan Reardon. “And, the audio and video seems clearer and smoother than both Zoom and FaceTime.” The platform is open to current students, and makes it easy for new people to sign up for music lessons from the comfort of their couch.
Asheville Music School is also launching a Practice-A-Thon on April 15, where students obtain sponsors for their practice hours. Donor funds benefit AMS programs, and are much needed at this time of economic slow-down. Students will win prizes for different practice and fundraising goals, and also for the best “Tiny House Concert.” A local take on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts, the AMS Tiny House Concert videos will be submitted by students performing for their families. “We are finding new and creative ways to keep our students engaged, active, and practicing,” says AMS Program Director Kylie Irvin. “Routines are important, and we hope the Practice-A-Thon provides some extra practice motivation. This downtime is a great opportunity for students to improve their skills!”
