Buncombe schools to stay online through at least Feb. 12

Press release from Buncombe County Schools:

Here’s a look at the BCS Board Briefing for Jan. 14. Among the important items on the action agenda, the board voted to modify the BCS Return to Learn Plan.

The BCS Board of Education met for a regular board meeting on Thursday and made the decision to continue remote learning for all students through at least Friday, Feb. 12. This is due to the persistent and significant spread of COVID-19 throughout our community. The Board has had frequent communication with the local health department and health experts. The Board has closely monitored the local percent positivity and North Carolina’s County Alert System, which indicates the critical spread of COVID-19 across Western North Carolina. According to health experts, we continue to be in the midst of a surge in COVID-19 cases, likely due to holiday travel. By remaining virtual, we aim to slow the spread of this virus and keep our staff and students as safe and healthy as possible.

This motion that passed allows the board an opportunity to review the local metrics and determine at our Thursday, Feb. 4, board meeting whether conditions warrant a return to a Plan B operation for K-12 or to remain in Plan C beginning Monday, Feb. 15.

We understand this may not be the decision that all of our stakeholders wanted. But the BCS Board of Education has gathered data and feedback throughout this school year and continues to make the best choices possible to keep our staff, students, and campuses healthy and safe.

Please remember that Monday, Jan. 18 is the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday and there will be no school.
