I-26 traffic shifting to new concrete

Press release from North Carolina Department of Transportation

Drivers heading into Asheville along Interstate 26 West will benefit from a new concrete surface near Brevard Road starting Saturday morning.

A contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation will shift traffic from the existing outside lanes to the inside lanes where new concrete has been set as part of a project to improve the I-26/Brevard Road interchange.

Crews will begin preparing for the shift late Friday night and complete the operation before sunrise on Saturday.

Traffic will be directed through the inside lanes for this 1.5-mile stretch for the remainder of the project. Crews plan to switch eastbound traffic to the inside lanes later this month.

These shifts will allow the contractor to pour concrete in the final lane and tie all of the new construction together across the entire project area.

Crews are on track to complete the $47.4 million project in December. The project includes new lanes for I-26, a new bridge on Brevard Road over the interstate, new on-ramps to I-26 and new exit ramps from the interstate.

Transportation officials remind drivers to slow down in work zones, drive with caution and obey all posted signs.
