Press release from Nikwasi Initiative:
The Cherokee have always viewed the river as “Long Man (Gunahita Asgaya) whose head lay in the mountains and feet in the sea. Long Man (or Long Person) was a revered figure among the Cherokee as the one who provided water to drink, cleanliness, food, and numerous cultural rituals tied to medicine and washing away bad thoughts and sadness.
On Wednesday, October 20th from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. everyone is invited to honor their connection to Long Man with a breakfast presented by North American Indian Women’s Association, Blessings of the River, and Presentations on the cultural ties between the river and Cherokee. Then all will disperse to clean trash out of waterways. This is much more than a “river cleanup,” it is a cultural awakening and re-awakening. Honoring Long Man Day celebrations will continue in future years.
Please join the EBCI Natural Resources Department and Nikwasi Initiative at the Cherokee Fairgrounds, Cherokee, NC.
Or if you live in Snowbird Community, people will meet at the community center.
