As the United States nears its 250th year, North Carolina is preparing to commemorate this important historical marker. Buncombe County Special Collections is proud to partner with the State Historic Records Advisory Board on a free workshop that will focus on working with community members to preserve Buncombe County’s stories and narratives of our collective past, present, and future.
Special Collections Manager Katherine Cutshall and Register of Deeds Drew Reisinger have partnered with the State Archives on a free workshop that will provide tools and inspiration to work with Buncombe’s cultural heritage practitioners and community organization leaders to host community scanning days, collect oral histories, and develop exhibits and programs to share these compelling stories.
Regional workshop
-Friday, Sept. 23, 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at Pack Memorial Library, 67 Haywood St., Asheville
–Register in advance (Note: paid parking is adjacent and free parking is available 3 blocks away in Buncombe County’s Parking Garage at Sears Alley)
-Instructors: David Gwynn, Digital Projects Coordinator, UNC-G Libraries; John Horan, State Archives Oral Historian; and State Archives outreach staff and partners
-Workshop will include lunch, and participants may receive $20 stipends to offset travel costs, while funds last (State employees are welcome but not eligible)Funding for these workshops is provided through a state board programming grant from the National Historical Publications & Records Commission.
