Press release from BeLoved Asheville:
On Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2022 at 4pm, BeLoved Asheville invites the community and local leaders to join together to celebrate the vertical construction of the BeLoved Village, a community of 12 deeply affordable (30% AMI), sustainable micro-homes at 15 Overbrook Place in East Asheville.
BeLoved Asheville, a local non-profit organization with a mission to “cultivate a transformational way of life, rooted in community, creativity, and equity,” has broken ground on the first house of the BeLoved Village, which the community hopes will be an innovative solution to the housing crisis in Asheville.
Three homes in phase 1 are under construction and set to go vertical over the next two weeks with help from volunteers from J & N Construction and America’s Home Place. Phase 2 and 3 will begin quickly after that with the goal of completing homes early in 2023. “This week marks a major turning point as we begin vertical construction at the BeLoved Village! And we have good news to share as 84 Lumber comes on to be our Framing Sponsor of our 3 homes in Phase 1 of the Village! We are grateful for J & N Construction who are donating the time of one of their framing crews for the next two weeks! This is a very exciting time and we hope you will come and celebrate with us! And we are thankful for America’s Home Place supporting with putting up foundation posts.” says Amy Cantrell, a Co-Director of BeLoved Asheville
Today, we will celebrate 84 Lumber’s sponsorship. Amy says, “A national leader in lumber and building supplies for the construction industry is stepping up to be a leader in helping to solve the housing crisis! Our deep gratitude to 84 Lumber our Framing Sponsor for three homes at the BeLoved Village! Together, we are bringing our neighbors in need HOME! We see and hear the pain of those living through the housing crisis every day. Today, we see HOPE embodied in 84 Lumber’s commitment to the community and to making sure that people have the dignity and stability of a safe place to call home. We know that this makes our community and our nation stronger when we give back and care for each other as neighbors. Thank you, thank you, thank you to TEAM 84 Lumber!”
“In the wake of the death of Janet Jones, who froze to death on the streets of Asheville in October 2016, our community of people who are directly impacted by the housing crisis began to dream of creating our own homes. The community heard our dream and together, we are raising a village,” Amy remembers.
“The BeLoved Village is a housing solution for people on fixed incomes trying to stay in our local community including our elders, people without homes, people of color being gentrified out of our community, and workers who don’t make enough to afford housing in the community in which they work,” says Amy Cantrell. “It takes a village to raise a village and we are so amazed at the thousands of people in our community who are being the change by helping to solve the housing crisis. From professionals to children, from retirees to companies, people are coming together to share their skills and gifts to make sure that local people can come home!” For sponsorship information, to help via donations of building materials, to volunteer, or for more information please email belovedasheville@gmail.com.
